I can only address my own experience here -- it was one I would not ever care to repeat for myself or my family. I will speak to what happened to us. However, just before doing that I was interested to read that Julia, the prior reviewer, noted something I found as well. That was Michael's lack of responsiveness from the beginning. Our rental was approved in late October for a trip the last week of December. I emailed him four times about the rental, to ask about the insurance, the pickup of the vehicle, and whether he received my completed rental agreement form. He never responded to any of those emails. He told me the one time I met him in person that he was too busy to respond with his other businesses. He finally got back in the last two weeks before our trip by text and voicemail. I gave him our flight information for Maui in advance. He had told me it would be a $50 fee in cash each time to deliver and pick up his vehicle. We came in on Mokulele Airlines at the Kahului airport. Still the communications foul up continued. He called shortly after we got in. We'd never been to Maui before. We were at Kahului but what I said to him led him to think we were at a smaller little used airport on the other side of the island some two hours away. Giving him the flight information beforehand was not enough to communicate where we were coming in. His thinking, and my thinking too we were at the other airport, led to his leaving the car at the nearby Costco, with the keys in the gas tank and sending pictures where it was parked. He said he had to leave to get to a meeting. Discovering shortly afterwards we were in fact at the main airport, we found the vehicle a short distance away at Costco. My wife was appalled when she saw the car covered in dust outside and in. Our four-year-old son started sneezing continually once inside. We drove to the parking lot of the neighboring Marriott to figure out what next to do. When I tried to start the motor again the battery was dead. I called Mike and he said to use the jumper cables in back and ask someone else in the lot to give us a jump. We did that and the cables proved completely ineffective in starting the motor. I called AAA for a jump start and the driver when he arrived finally got it started. He said Mike's cables were more designed to start a motorcycle and of little use otherwise. He also did a test of the battery and found it was quite weak. He told me it might hold out for the five days of our rental if the motor was turned off promptly each time or it might not. There were some other things I noticed in the vehicle: the brake light remained on when released, the stickers for the oil change and inspection were both expired, and the registration on the license plate would expire Dec. 31, the day before we were returning it. I called Mike again and told him that which he all dismissed saying, for one, he uses a different kind of motor oil and doesn't need to follow the regular oil change schedule, the finding about the battery was only the AAA guy's opinion, the registration expiration didn't matter as we'd only have the car for a few more hours after it expired, and that I was just creating problems for myself. My wife refused to ride in his car or have our son in it. I told him we were going to return it that same night. He came to the hotel lot where the car was still parked and changed the battery that evening -- something he didn't think necessary to do before that even as he told me the battery also had died on a previous renter. He didn't bring up the total $100 cash fee, perhaps given how much of a complete financial waste this was for us. He told me he'd only ever received stellar reviews from customers. There can be a huge gap between what someone says and what they do. Despite the waste to us it was an enormous relief to have his car off our hands, and to rent a clean vehicle for when our other family members arrived. I think the lack of response at the start was a clue as to what was coming. I should've acted accordingly and regret now given what we found our rental request was ever accepted.

Leading up to the trip, communication was pretty poor leaving us to ask Outdoorsy to give Michael a nudge. He was pleasant enough and once we had his cell # we were able to text him while renting if we had any concerns. Communication was then very good. As for the vehicle and set up, and this is partially our fault for not really considering it, but this type of set up is really only good if you plan on staying in one place for multiple nights and don't need to take the truck anywhere. The set up and tear down took much longer than we thought it would - longer then setting up a modern tent. Although with the rain we encountered it was nice to be off the ground. The bed was very comfortable, and the gear was all great. More than one sleeping bag would of been good for our cold camp night up on the crater, but we survived. Ladder was jammed and awning were jammed so we couldn't use the awning to cook under. Overall, it was an ok experience but again probably best for those staying in one place for long periods of time. FYI campsites in Maui are pretty bare bones. Olowalu will require you camp in a parking lot next to the highway with this vehicle but the amenities were good. Just don't count on sleeping very much, it's VERY loud. We left Waiʻanapanapa state park after one night because the camp site surrounded the toilets and offered no showers or dish cleaning stations. Only a toilet and a water fountain. We were woken up to a massive septic truck driving through our campsite to pump out the septic tank - awesome! Caretaker was no where to be found - it's a poorly laid out camp site only good for visiting for the day.
