I booked this van for a couple days for a weekend trip with 3 kids. It had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Hawaii surf campers had a smooth check in and checkout process, and gave us all the info we needed for a solid trip. The van was great and gave us that glamping experience. We will definitely rent this again!

My husband and I’s first time in Hawaii for our honeymoon and first time in a camper van. Lucas was great at communicating from the start and was able to accommodate our super last minute reservation. We were beyond pleased with the van and it was the perfect way to explore Oahu!! We we are looking forward to our next camper van experience. Thank you so much Lucas!!

We enjoyed the experience of staying in a VW camper van to RV the 50th state. These vans were something we'd always looked at with interest over the years. Everything was provided to use the van comfortably. Though we didn't cook in it, we drove and slept in it with ease. Pop top was super helpful on warm breezy Hawaiian nights. This is not a concours example of a VW van, but a bit of a rust bucket. That said everything condition added "patina" and didn't interfere with operation; van was safe and authentic. Mallory is living her best life at Hawaii Surf Campers.

Super sweet hosts and they are on top of it and very responsive, the van is really fun, great value for such an affordable price, and this thing has so much character but is also comfy & cozy! It’s just a blast! Highly recommend!

Loved the Van. Owners were great to work with and made everything easy. This was our third time to the island. Thought we had done everything but this Van made everything feel new again! Make sure to ask for extra pillows and a fan and extra shades for the windows.Radio was a little tricky for us for some reason. Ask the team to help you connect.

Hello Sam good afternoon and thank you for your short review the same day after returning the vehicle. We are Sad to see you based your WHOLE experience of a 10 day rental based on the damage caused by you on the pop top tent of our vehicle. This vehicles are vintage and special. Any labor + parts on these vehicles are expensive due to the nature of the cars and how special they are. We are very transparent with our clients in regards costs and that they will be charged upon return in case something breaks, or something is damaged during the rental. We do provide you a video explaining very well how to operate this vehicles, additionally we do explain upon your arrival things to watch for, and one of them is how to operate the tent. As we do not offer any sewing services, if the tent canvas is teared (your case) we do have to either remove the top of the van completely and take the tent to a sewing shop and then reinstall, or remove the tent and install a new one. This is a labor intensive work regardless of the price of a new tent or sewing service. We really dislike having to explain this operation in public because it does not relate to the experience in a van here in Hawaii or our service. However unfortunately it seems like this needs to be shown on your case. Additionally ins unfortunate that we do have to come across a company taking advantage of a situation given that you damaged one product you don't want to pay for and we are just trying to make sure our vehicles are well taken care for all our clients. We had a great time. The van was a great way to see the island. However, I was very disappointed with two aspects of the Hawaii Surf Campers experience:1) The checkout process took 90 minutes. They actually have a great video showing all the ins-and-outs of the van, but they still go through all the same material in-person, just slower. But this is not too big a deal.2) They charge $100 extra for cleaning, but don’t tell you this until the end. We returned the van in the same shape as we received it. However they claimed there was “some sand on the floor”. Ok fine, but they should have told us this would cost an extra $100 from the beginning . Instead we left feeling ripped off.
Now after looking at the reviews from other renters this seems to be their MO.

Hello Campbell good morning and thank you for your message about your rental. Also thank you for driving Tango around for a couple nights with your family as well as the kind words on our check-in methods.We are sorry to hear you are unhappy with our CLEANING FEE however, given the nature of your complain and description, we do need to answer this in order to portrait the REALITY of this situation rather than your perception. So here are a few key points for better understanding.1 - WE DO NOT CHARGE A CLEANING FEE from every client, as a matter of fact, we rarely charge a cleaning fee because most of the time our clients do return the van clean as agreed during their check-in.
Unlike the outdoorsy client (you), we unfortunately can't post pictures on our reply, however after your rental returned there was also sand over the driver and passenger seat, on the driver and passenger cabin floor, as well as the top bed of Tango, which is indication that the van was not cleaned prior return. And unfortunately those pictures were not posted.2 - We also DO TELL AND WARN YOU about the cleaning fee, not only once but MULTIPLE TIMES prior and during you rental. On the first document you sign with us, it says in BOLD RED ALL CAPITAL letters, that you will be returning the van clean otherwise a $100 fee will be charged. You initial and signed that document. Not only there, we also have an app that lets you take a picture of the interior of the van prior your check-in acknowledging the van is clean and it will be returned the same way. Further, prior your check-out (your last day in the van) we send you an EMAIL as well as a TEXT MESSAGE reminding you that you need to clean the van prior arrival otherwise you will have a $100 cleaning fee to your card on file.With all that said, please do understand and acknowledge that your review does not portrait the reality of our operations. We do understand that NOBODY wants to get charged a cleaning fee and it is not cool, we do agree with that. However as said many times to you in person as well as written on our terms and conditions (which you said twice that you read and agree with them) we are not trying to take advantage of anybody, and we don't want to have to REMIND you guys about those terms you read as much as we already do. We are just trying to be respectful to our vehicles and other clients that will use them. When the van is returned dirty, unfortunately is an indication that the vehicle was not very well taken care of, so we do have that fee happening.Please understand that this is not an argument by any means or also not an excuse, we do accept your complain and we do agree that having the cleaning fee is not nice, however you also must acknowledge that we DO NOT HIDE that fee and it is not something that is charged every rental, these are just facts.We again appreciate your time with tango and the kind words your wrote. The 1982 Orange Westfalia 'Tango' was such a fun vehicle for my wife and I to rent on our honeymoon. We really enjoyed it's aesthetics however every morning on the first cold start had issues. We ended up bump starting it or using the internal jump to get the starter to turn fast enough. It's well finished, but at the end of the day it's still an antique van. Make sure you really go over how it works or specifically how to jump it from it's own battery. I'd also skip the $35 beach chair and just buy one from Walmart next time. So if you want a lovable quirky vehicle to live your North Coast Dreams, go for it. If you want reliable turn key transportation that is guaranteed to start with power steering maybe look elsewhere. I'd definitely rent it again, but if I wasn't mechanically inclined we would have been stuck waiting for a mechanic.

epic time glad i went threw outdoorsy and found this company. so many vans to choose from, and they’re all in great shape. highly recommended. ross was also the man, helped out a bunch and went threw the steps very clearly. i’ll be back no doubt
